CUSTOMER TESTIMONIALS
Don't take our word for it
We recently caught up with some of our customers to ask what’s changed since moving to Silverfin. Here’s what they told us, in their own words.
If Silverfin was a person, I would say their key kind of characteristics is around loyalty, consistency, reliability, and that's what you need in a in a in a software. We wanted to grow. We wanted to buy more advisory services. And having Sealfin as core tech app really helped us in terms of knowing that this is done in a certain way and we can't live without it now.
Chris Barnard, Collective Concepts
How has Silverfin enabled you to develop your practice?
When we're working on a particular client job, if someone new picked it up, they would just look at the spreadsheet of last year and copy good or bad habits. There weren't standardized processes and ways that we did it. There wasn't a collective concept way of doing things. We were very much reliant on spreadsheets. It was very consistent pretend on the user that was using the spreadsheets. You can't just add a person to a process and hope that will solve the problem. You need to kind of look at software and the efficiencies you get with software. Silverfin kind of dovetails into the bookkeeping platform very well. Whether we have, you know, ten clients, a hundred clients, a thousand clients, all in get the same end result. Silverfin massively helped in terms of they can get quickly on board the way that we do things. So one of the benefits using Silverfin is the ability to not become a bottleneck. Someone else can pick up the work. One of our future goals is to have multi site offices. Without having Silverfin, we would find it really hard to do that. Silverfin is able to future proof our business because as we grow, we're able scale. Once you get used to it and you realize, you know, you're working a lot more smarter than you used to be.
Chris Barnard, Collective Concepts
What pain points make businesses consider platforms like Silverfin?
Costs of hiring staff have gone up now as a kind of practice owner. You need to kind of look at software and the efficiencies you get with software that you may not get with just adding another person. And I think, you know, Silverpine massively helped, you know, when we had a smaller team to kind of really improve our processes at an earlier stage.
Chris Barnard, Collective Concepts
How would you describe Silverfin as a good fit for small accounting firms?
If Silverfin was a person, would say their key kind of characteristics is around loyalty, consistency, reliability and that's what you need in a software that's doing that is those kind of three kind of points.
Chris Barnard, Collective Concepts
How would you describe Silverfin if it was a person?
I'm Chris. I'm the founder of Collective Concepts. We are a proactive accountancy team where we kind of really want to help clients and provide really useful insights so we can add value and not just look at what happened in the past, but really provide add value and additional value from what they may get from more of a compliance only accountant. So, one of the pain points we particularly found is when we're working on a particular client job, if someone new picked it up, they would just look at the spreadsheet of last year and copy good or bad habits. And what we were finding is we weren't being consistent in our in our processes. So, we were looking to find a find a solution really. Whatever level of the person who was working on that particular client was able to follow a minimum standard, which in turn makes us more efficient, more effective, and able to spend more time adding value to our clients. So, I think what we're looking for with Silverfin is we're looking for a solution where we're able to scale up and grow with a particular platform without the pain points of manual spreadsheets. We were looking for a software solution to help us with consistency around the work that we did for our clients. So, we were very much reliant on spreadsheets and what we found here, it was very consistent pretend on the user that was using the spreadsheets. What we want to do is to bring consistencies and gather data from Xero and other platforms in one place. So, when we were doing our working papers or management accounts, we were all starting at the same base and be able to more efficient in the work we were doing. We'll go into a market for find a solution like Silver fin to be able to scale and grow and be able to have those efficiencies from day one. So, as our business was only set up in twenty twenty two, we're very clear in terms of what we're trying to achieve in terms of having a clear process in from day one. So one of the biggest frustrations we had was the inconsistency of work and I could review someone's work and then the next day they would do it in a different way. So there weren't standardized processes and ways that we did it. There wasn't a collective concept way of doing things And with spreadsheets, it was very much you could have a user does it one way because they've done it for five years this way and another user that was doing completely different. I think a lot of firms in the same boat really, you just use spreadsheets. And when I started, it was, you know, paper and pen client files, lot more manual. So, I think kind of, you know, over the last twenty years, we've seen a shift from, you know, paper to definitely excel to now looking at more efficient efficient ways. And I think because costs of hiring staff have gone up now as a a kind of practice owner, you can't just add a person to a process and hope that will solve the problem. You need to kind of look at software and the efficiencies you get with software that you may not get with just adding another person. We want our accounts done. We want our management accounts. We want some to good tax advice. They don't care how we produce their accounts for example. So, still think was able to ensure that we're spending the right amount of time on the important things and decreasing the time we're spending on compliance activities like accounts production. I think along those lines of kind of, you know, a free agent or a zero, Silverthin kind of dovetails into the bookkeeping platform very well. And I think what you tend to find the bookkeeping system is good at the transactional stuff, but it doesn't set process. It doesn't set systems. It doesn't set the way that we do our work. And that's the thing we want to be very clear is we wanted to do it in a certain way. So, whether we have ten clients, a hundred clients, a thousand clients, all of them get the same end result in terms of speed, in terms of how we produce work within our SLAs, but also in terms of we know that this work will take us this amount of time and that will always stay the same. I think after working with Silpen for three months, we've gone through our onboarding period. We really understood the software really well and we found it as part of the team really. It was a really important part in everything that we do and now we're looking back to it. We couldn't live without it. But you have to go through the first kind of couple of months in terms of change, learning the systems, getting everyone on board And, what was important is that we all move to it at the same time and there was no kind of half measures. They all feel massively helped in terms of when we're recruiting new staff, they can get quickly on board the way that we do things. So whether we're employing like a trainee or a qualified accountant, they will have habits they would picked up from previous jobs. And what we found is they wanted to do things in the way they've always done things. So this was an easy way to ensure that we're doing things in kind of that collective concept way, in a nice easy way about loads of your extra training manuals because you have to stick to a certain way of doing things. It really is that consistency and approach around scaling up. Because if you've got a pain point around particular part of the process, as you grow and you have new staff, you're always gonna have that pain point there gets bigger and bigger. And what we've found is when we hired our first member of staff without Silverfin, they wanted to have their own spreadsheet templates. And you end up approach where they had their spreadsheet template. I had mine and then the end result was it was taking longer. Longer for me because I had to get used to their templates and longer for them because I was trying to push them in a different By having Silverfin, it meant that we both had to do things in the same way, which meant we were both doing it the collective concepts way, which was really valuable in terms of that efficiency piece. Silverfin was really great at was providing consistency when we're using an outsourced team. So, you know, having a team next to you has its own challenges in terms of consistency and making sure they're doing things the same way. But when you got an outsourced team that's remote, we're finding that the consistency piece in terms of, well, why did you do that spreadsheet in that certain way? By making them do it in a certain way of a certain template, we found that was one of the biggest advantages we found with Silverfin. Really hard to put a time on it, I guess, in terms of, you know, the manager level, the junior level. But what I would say definitely, they're able to work with on more things at once. So instead of maybe working on, you know, three, four set of accounts at the same time, they're now working on like a minimum of ten at a time, which means they're able to adapt because sometimes you do half a job and they need some information from a client, you have to stop. But knowing that you've got another five or six jobs going on in an easy to get to way, you're able to have those gaps in a more efficient way. One of the benefits using Silverfin is the ability to not become a bottleneck and able to delegate work. So whether you're on your way on holiday, you've a staff member sick, someone else can pick up the work because the file was there with all the notes. They were to pick it up and because our, you know, processes are standardised, it means anyone could pick up that job and they know what to do, what to expect. One of the things that Silphing really helps is finding information quickly. So for example, we may be looking for a certain piece of information to answer a client question such as what my dividends worth last year and what we found is that different members of the team were struggling to find that data quickly by having all in one clean digital working papers we found we can find information a lot more quickly because they knew where everything was. One of our managers, Shri, he found it particularly useful when he's doing his manager reviews. So when he was reviewing the work of juniors, he found the process in terms of providing feedback, review points was far more efficient because it was all within a closed system. So instead of finding, you know, points within a spreadsheets or in different systems, all of his feedback to the junior was in one place, which means that we're able to give better feedback to our juniors in a more quicker way. And because we it's all within one digital file, we're able to list the queries in one place and by tag as well. And likewise, when I'm doing a partner review, what we found is my partner reviews were listed here. The manager reviews were listed there and it's really clean and easy to see where we're at. And I think that was the the best thing about it was the communication around it. You know, Excel doesn't have a communication. You can't chat someone so much on an Excel sheet. But with this, you're able to combine to kind of a team's element, a chat facility, as well as being able to tag your questions and notes, which meant everything was kept within that client file as well. So later on, if you had a question, you know, a year after the event, we're able to go into the file and quickly find the answers. We've been able to embed kind of service level agreements with our clients in terms of, keeping them accountable, but also keeping us accountable. So, for example, like for our management accounts, we want them to be done within two weeks. And because we've got the templates already there, the process to do the management accounts templates is far quicker because you're not just, you know, getting a spreadsheet and then altering it and spending hours and hours. You've already got the file already half done for you because it's pulling the information. So I think that's the biggest thing with clients is able to be more efficient and able to turn around work in a far more quicker way. There's less kind of, you know, setting up time and they're able to go into it straight away and also move between client and client quite quickly. Time saving is important, but actually looking at the work we're doing. So, we want to spend more time adding value. So, we don't get bogged down in kind of the non add value task. We want to spend more time, you know, helping clients, giving them the advice. So, therefore, when we're looking at things like working papers, we want to minimize the time it takes from that. So, we're able to spend more time with the more important things that the clients really value. I think, Certolfill will help us massively as we grow. So, one of our future goals to have multi site offices. And I think by having that consistent process with more than one office, I think that will massively help our kind of meet our goals going forward. And without having Silverfin, we would find it really hard to do that. I think kind of as a young ambitious owner, you're always looking about, well, you know, what's the next year about what's your future plans and scaling and having pain points is one of the things that scares me a little bit. And able to kind of add people, add more clients into a process. You don't want additional pain points, you don't want your margins dropping by utilizing Silverfin will really help that. So, Silverfin is able to future proof our business because as we grow, we're able to scale and we're able to add more people, hire more staff and we've got confidence they're gonna keep to the same process is. I think using Silverfin has been really beneficial to our business. If you're thinking about moving something like Silverfin, you just need to do it. If you kind of just wait, I'll do it next month, I'll do it next year. That will never happen. You just need to kind of write, we're starting it from this date and we're just gonna do it because the benefits that we had after going through that three month pay period were very very large indeed.

What pain points make businesses consider platforms like Silverfin?
So I think we're having a large or small team. I think kind of Zilfind helps whether you've got one staff member to having a hundred staff members because you're still getting that consistency, know, efficiencies, the the working smarter, you know, where we had one person or a hundred people. And so I would say kind of benefit is probably more when you have less because when you're a smaller team, it's more about the individual how they do something, you see. And it's hard to kind monitor how they're doing something. And I think when you've got a smaller team, you know, it's very easy to forget about, you know, how how do we do things. And I think, you know, Silphin massively helps, you know, when we had a smaller team to kind of really improve our proofs just as at an earlier stage. I think when using Silverfin or any new software, the cost is an instant barrier to entry. But what I found after a few months of using it, I didn't even think about the cost I was spending anymore because the benefits far out value that cost. And in terms of growing the team and growing efficient processes, you know, that's far more value than an extra amount I'm paying each month. After using Seal for a few months, we almost forgot about the monthly cost because the benefits far outweigh the negatives. I think when you start using a software, you only realize the value of it if it's not there anymore. And I think what we found is if Zilfinn wasn't there anymore, I don't think we'd go back to spreadsheets anymore. Like, I don't know how I'd be able to review, you know, a a set of accounts on a spreadsheet anymore. I remember going back the other day and we had to look at back some old working papers on spreadsheets. And I was like, where's that tab? You know, we're like clicking through it. So I think kind of once you get used to it and it's kind of built in your systems, you know, it's hard to go back the way you've done things and you realize, you know, you're working a lot more smarter than you used to be.
Chris Barnard, Collective Concepts
How did you approach the investment decision for Silverfin?
We had businesses that were still working a lot on paper, if we're being honest, and some desktop platforms as well. So it was a huge change. We are a private equity backed consolidator in the UK. We've been on this journey for three, thirty four years now, and Silverfin, frankly, has played a big part in helping us bring our acquired businesses together. Putting people and culture to one side, one of the other biggest challenges we found bringing businesses together was just the different ways of doing effectively the same thing. One would be quite surprised how many different ways there are doing a set of working papers or a set of accounts. Firstly, one of the biggest benefits for Silverfin or to Silverfin for us was that it's based in the cloud. It's also able to provide that very standardized platform so we can bring offices all together across the country, very, very diverse teams, but start to work in one standardized way. So selfishly, as head of outsourcing, one of the biggest positive impacts of Silverfin has been doing the in year working papers that support the management information. And you get to the end of the year, and effectively, the accounts are done, bar a few extra disclosures. So awesome efficiency is starting to be achieved in our team.
Sarah Gardner, Shaw Gibbs
Why moving to the cloud mattered most.
Old systems, multiple processes, and different ways of working, so it's really hard to manage and and standardize our ways of working across the team. Gravitura, a top thirty accounting firm, offer all services to our clients. Bringing all seven businesses that are now part of Gravitura together was a lot of hard work, but has been great as an outcome for it. I think definitely understanding how people work before and agreeing the new ways of working was really important to start with, and then standardizing and documenting it so any new businesses or teams that join the group can easily roll out and start using Silverfin, and if you like, to grab it away, which we've agreed to Silverfin. I'd there's a few reasons why it felt the right fit. A few of the businesses who joined the group already used it. I think it makes a real difference when the team like it and are using it well. One of our tech strategies is to try and pick, like, market leading cloud based platforms. I think much easier to use, much more scalable, and the fact it's a a product based business of, like, development improvement sort of aligns with our tech strategy, and then it gives that, you know, constant thread throughout standardization that anyone can use it throughout. The onboarding and rollout process in Silverfin, I think that's evolved over time. When we first started rolling out, we only had four firms that were part of the group. Two of them had used it before, so there was that level saying of the gravity away in using Silverfin standardization, and that was probably more effort in the designing and agreeing of the processes. Once we've done that, though, any new company that's joined the group, it's been much easier to sort of, share the learnings from before and roll them on office by office. And our most recent office, Oxford, is loving it and now using it in the last couple of months. And that process definitely become much slicker. Certainly, working the Sylvan team and our, like, internal champions sort of lead that rollout, and we're looking forward to doing more in the future. I'd say the biggest impact overall is the ability for anyone to work on a client and the accounts. So we have team members in Essex, working team members in Exeter. As with prior to that, we just couldn't do it, we can share work to the right people at the right time. I think some of the features and functionalities are far better than the tools we're using before. So I think actually working more collaboratively, certainly the review and feedback features the team talked really highly of, and the way actually our quality and risk management, the fact we do things the same way, again, is really good for Gravita looking forwards. As we move forwards in going with Gravita, I think Silfin's really impactful in the if we have resource countries, different offices, we can easily share that workload and different offices have different seasonality. So I think that's been really helpful. As we grow, we can then share that across across each office.
Simon Gateley, Gravita
What changed after leaving the old toolset.
Change management in the accountancy industry is a absolute minefield. So BCAL is a London based practice, and we have currently five offices and about four hundred and fifty, five hundred employees, and we use Silverfin in our accounts and business services team, which is approximately a hundred and fifty people. The biggest frustration was just inconsistencies across the board. Different partners, different managers were doing different ways of producing a set of accounts. So the main aim was to get standardization across the board and make sure that everyone was working in a consistent way. When we initially started, it was a lot to take on. Silverfin covers a huge amount of the work we do on a day to day basis. But as people have got confidence in the system and really understand what Silfen and VKL joined together are trying to do, it's really changed the way that people work. We've really utilized the Silfen team. So the CS team have been instrumental in making sure that our rollout has been useful and also that we're getting all of the up to date content on a regular basis. I always say that it's in that second year that when you've implemented Silverfin in year one and then you roll it forward into year two, those efficiency gains and that standardization that you get across the board just really changes the whole dynamic of the team, and we're able to share resource cross office, cross teams, and really have exactly the same product. Silverfin, it really has given that standardization, that efficiency gain.
Hollie Moore, BKL
Standardising the way the whole team works.
For us, it just it was the time saving, and there was no errors in the data as it brought forward. We prepare schedules and working papers on a regular basis. Every team member, could prepare them slightly differently for every client, and so there's many different ways that people were doing things. We were looking at something that could streamline that, and we could set a a template format to make sure that everyone was producing the same quality and following the same data, and we're getting the same output. The digital journey is is not gonna be easy. You've got a team of people that you all have to convince to do things a different way. A lot of the support that Sullivan gave us in mapping out how we were gonna phase this into our firm and working with us and working with the team on numerous sessions around the problems that they were encountering with what they were already doing and how that was gonna be resolved in Silverfin. And really getting them involved in building how those workflows, look for them as well was really key. So they were involved from the start and bought in at that stage. A move to Silverfin means with it embedded all in within the software, we have monthly workflows with all those reconciliations in. The previous months roll forward, the data rolls forward, and a lot of the data fills in itself automatically from our source data, so Xero, QuickBooks, etcetera. So our year end then has all the reconciliations automatically in there, so it just means that it's such a smooth process now. We have built and rolled out, and we're successfully using the insights feature now, and that's tracking our jobs and how they progress, which is really key for us as we're growing because we need to control our delivery to clients. It's it's changed in the team because if there was somebody that had a lot of pressure or time pressure or deadlines, all the team members can support it. Also means that we're not losing any of the previous periods data. So where there was a change in team member or a manager wants to look back, they all the data is there, and it's all flowing and connected into the source data as well.
Jill Morris, PM+M
Growing without losing the previous period's data.
Silverfin were the only provider who were able to make those customizations that we needed. What we were doing previously was building sets of accounts in whatever it we were using at the time and then exporting it as a PDF and then manually editing it. And the reason that it really came to head for me is because we're Guernsey based, all of our, year end reporting is the same as the UK broadly, but there's like subtle differences. Say, for example, where you're putting in a disclosure about an audit exemption, the wording is different, the law that's mentioned is different, and no one other than Silverfin was able to offer any customization for that. Our year end process is definitely a lot smoother with Silverfin. Silverfin's made it really easy for us to settle that process of one person's preparing and another person's reviewing. That has a really small practice before. It was kinda just me. So we weren't really necessarily following that step by step process that larger practices would follow, but it's made it super simple because Silverfin really clearly shows us what each person has done and make sure that any supporting documentation is all in the right place. Silverfin, even just a week ago, put in a customization that I asked for maybe a year ago and they said at the time, sorry, we can't do this one. And I said, well, that's okay. But then a week ago, we had an email saying, hey, do you know that thing you asked for? We've done it. And no one else would do that for us. Initially, the the Silverfin, like, academy kind of thing, it was all video based and you had to watch the videos and then try to and that doesn't really work for me. So I emailed and I said, look. I I can't follow this. And our account manager said, look. Give me, like, a day. And she came back and she turned all of the video content into PDFs. And it was just, like, a really good, like, personal touch, that really made a huge difference.
Tim Chilestone, TCS Guernsey
The only provider who could customise to suit our needs.
I'm not gonna lie. Moving on to one standardized platform is a huge, huge change. Change management in the accountancy industry is a absolute minefield, and I don't think there's a right way of doing it. The digital journey is is not gonna be easy. You've got a team of people that you all have to convince to do things a different way. We originally took the process of doing it team by team. So we work in smaller teams called pods. So we rolled it out to individual pods and sort of find frustrations and then sort of develops the way of rolling out the software each pod that comes along. I think definitely understanding how people work before and agreeing the new ways of working was really important to start with and then standardizing and documenting it. What we've actually learned is sometimes it's better to rip the plaster off quickly, as they say, and go for whole scale change as opposed to doing it over a longer period of time, which actually surprised us, but that definitely worked better for some officers. I always say that it's in that second year that when you've implemented Silverfin in year one and then you roll it forward into year two, those efficiency gains and that standardization that you get across the board just really changes the whole dynamic of the team, and we're able to share resource cross office, cross teams, and really have exactly the same product.
The hard part wasn't the software
How the efficiency gains and standardisation change the game.
If you're looking to move, you're looking to move for a reason. Right? If you're looking for new software, it's because you don't like your old software. And therefore, Silverfinch definitely on your, you know, at least on your list to check out. But for me, I think it should be at the top of that list. Change is exciting. I think that's that's normally what stops people. They don't like change or they put those barriers in place thinking no one will want to do it. It'll all still be done the same way. But if you're strong with what your vision is and you know that the output is gonna be so much better and it's gonna help in so many ways, you just have to just go for it. Trust the process. That first year can be tough, and I think there is so many gains that you get in that year too. Just trust in the process. The people that are unsure or sitting on the fence, I'd say give it a go. I team are really approachable. The rollout's really easy, and I think definitely compared to other products in the market, it is evolving, continues to evolve really quickly. For me, when managers and partners come to me about fourteen to eighteen months down the line, and they're like, I really get it. I get what you were trying to say. I now see what you were saying is a reality. For me, it's a bit of a no brainer. It's smoother than any other solution that I've seen, and I think that it's definitely like, it definitely should be among everyone's considerations.
Getting started with Silverfin
First impressions, unfiltered. And why you should start today.
I'd say the biggest, impact overall is the ability for anyone to work on a client and the accounts. So we have team members in Essex, working team members in Exeter. As with prior to that, we just couldn't do it, so we can share work to the right people at the right time. It's it's changed in the team because it allows that flow of data. We're not losing data with certain individuals. It's all kept within one system. Our year end process is definitely a lot smoother with Silverfin. Silverfin's made it really easy for us to settle that process of one person's preparing and another person's reviewing. It's also able to provide that very standardized platform so we can bring offices all together across the country, very, very diverse teams, but start to work in one standardized way. I think some of the features and functionalities are far better than the tools we're using before. So I think actually working more collaboratively, sending the review and feedback features the team talked really highly of, and the way actually our quality of risk management, the fact we do things the same way, again, is really good for Gravity looking forward. So with Finite, it really has given that standardization, that efficiency gain The gravity weight, which we've agreed to Silverfin.
Anyone can work on any client file
Bringing every office onto one way of working.
The Silvan team and the customer success team on onboarding spent a lot of time working with us, with the team as well and making sure that we were getting the implementation right and the output was gonna be right for us. We've really utilized the Silvan team, so the CS team have been instrumental in making sure that our rollout has been useful and also that we're getting all of the up to date content on a regular basis. I think the team always thinks it's a small thing, but I refer to them by, like, first names. They know each other personally, always on hand whether WhatsApp teams are jumping on a call if something goes wrong or something that's new. So, yeah, thank you for the efforts. And what I really liked as well is that initially, the the Silverfin, like, academy kind of thing, it was all video based, and that doesn't really work for me. So I emailed and I said, look, I I can't follow this. And our account manager said, look, give me, like, a day, and she came back and she turned all of the video content into PDFs for us to follow, which I found much easier, and it was just, like, a really good, like, personal touch that really made a huge difference. The Silverfin, even just a week ago, put in a customization that I asked for maybe a year ago, and they said at the time, sorry. We can't do this one. And I said, well, that's okay. But then a week ago, we had an email saying, hey. Do you know that thing you asked for? We've done it. And no one else would do that for us.
