The redesigned Insights: what’s changing and what’s coming next

The redesigned Insights: what's new and what's next blog post image
5min Read

Insights has a new look, a new query overview page, more room for your data, and filters that apply in one go. Here’s what’s new, and what’s coming next.

What we set out to improve

The feedback we get on Insights is rarely about the functionality itself. People know what they want to do, and we wanted to cut the time it takes to get there.

Three things came up consistently. The controls sat in a left sidebar that took up space the table could use, so you moved between the two to read results and change a filter. Every filter you added triggered its own reload, so building a query with four conditions meant four loads. And finding the query you wanted meant working through a small modal, with no overview of everything your firm had built.

None of that is dramatic on its own. But if you’re running portfolio sweeps across several hundred client files, you go round that loop dozens of times a week, and the time back adds up.

What’s new

It looks and moves like the rest of Silverfin. We redesigned the platform navigation earlier this year, and Insights stayed on the old interface while we did it. Moving from a working paper into Insights felt like moving between two products, and closing that gap was the obvious next step. Insights now matches the new navigation UI, so the layout, the controls and the behaviour are consistent with everywhere else you work. That matters more than aesthetics. You spend less time working out where things are.

A new query overview page. This part didn’t exist before. There was no single place to see every query your firm had built, and now there is. You can organise queries the way that makes sense to you, and pin the ones you use most so they’re always one click away. You can also sort and filter by visibility, publisher, alphabetically or date added. Those queries took work to build, so they shouldn’t be hard to find.

A very intuitive new set-up. The new layout, and especially the recently viewed and pinned structure, is a big step forward. The filters, by visibility, publisher and sorting, are a welcome addition too.

Your data gets the full screen. The controls that used to live in the left sidebar, period selection, filters and triggers, now sit in a toolbar above your table, where you can see all of them at once. With the sidebar gone, the table gets the full width of the screen. If you’re reading a query result across 300 client files with ten columns, that space makes the answer far easier to read at a glance.

Filters apply in one click. Add all the filters you need, then click Apply and the query runs once. Building a detailed query is now a single wait rather than a series of them. We’ve also shortened the route to a query in the first place: shortcuts to All clients sit directly in the navigation, and a new query picker takes you straight to a query when you already know which one you want.

Nothing you rely on has gone. Every option available in Insights today is still available, and a few things have moved to a more logical spot. We kept the change tight on purpose, so there’s nothing to relearn beyond where the controls now sit. If you’ve built a way of working around a saved query, a standing rule or a particular visibility setting, it carries straight over.

What’s next: an agent inside Insights

The redesign shortens the distance between having a question and seeing the data. The next step is taking out the setup in between.

Today, getting an answer starts with building the query: picking the filters and columns that get you there. Firms have built up real libraries that way, and those libraries still do the job. For a one-off question, though, it’s quicker to just ask.

So we’ll be bringing an agent into Insights. You ask the question in your own words, and it translates that into the right filters and columns. It shows you what’s possible: quality checks, ratios, workflow tracking. It explains how it decided which files qualify, so you can adjust the logic before you run it. And when the view is right, you save it as a reusable query for the whole firm.

You get to the answer without building the view first. It’s currently in development, and we’ll share more as it gets closer.

Why we keep investing in Insights

Insights is where compliance data becomes practice management, quality control and advisory at scale. The navigation came first, Insights follows, and the agent is next.

If you already use Insights, look out for the new interface in your platform soon. If you don’t, and you’ve been wondering what portfolio-level oversight would look like in your firm, ask your Silverfin contact for a walkthrough on your own data. The recommended queries make the point faster than I can.
